The Moment I Knew It Was Time to Quit My Job

The Moment I Knew It Was Time to Quit My JobThe Moment I Knew It Was Time to Quit My Job It was my birthday. Id come into the office earlier than usual to get a jump start on my workload so that I would be able to sneak out on time to meet a group of people for a celebratory dinner. No one at the office knew it was my birthday, and that was perfectly fine. See, I didnt exactly have the best relationship with my boss or colleagues. I worked for a small hedge fund where the atmosphere was perpetually tense and intense. Nobody really seemed to like one abedrngnisher, and because my goal was to earn a paycheck rather than make friends , that wasnt bothersome to me. What irked me, however, was the fact that everyone at the office treated me like dirt even though I had a solid work ethic and generally went well above and beyond the call of duty to make other people mora money. In other words, I wasnt expecting special treatment for it being my birthday. I just wanted the day to go smoothly (smoothly being a relative term at an office where fistfights werent unusual and foulspiel language was the go-to means of communication). It didnt, though. And thats why I decided that day to quit.Whats funny is that notlagehing particularly disturbing happened that day. Sure, people yelled at me, but that was par for the course. Rather, there were two related incidents that helped me realize I was done. The first was when a colleague asked me to jump on a 600 p.m. conference call in his place because he had to leave unexpectedly. I politely explained that I had plans after work and had to leave by 530 myself - something I rarely did, but also something I was by no means obligated to clear with him or my boss . Rather than accept my answer and pursue an alternate solution, he proceeded to berate me for wanting to have a social life. Fine. The next episode happened just moments later. I had finished up my work for the day and was gathering my belongings when another co worker looked up at the clock, saw what time it was, and asked, in the snidest tone possible, Half day today? Now, the last time I checked, working from 800 a.m. to 530 p.m. is hardly a half day, but to be fair, Im sure he was trying to be obnoxious more so than inquire as to whether I was actually working half a day. Still, I was done.I left on time. I went to dinner reeling over the two incidents while my friends tried to distract me with just about every other topic imaginable. And the next day, I composed my resignation letter .The funny thing is that I really shouldve resigned from that job years before I did. The environment was toxic , and while the work itself was interesting, it wasnt what I wanted to do with my career. The only reason I stayed so long was that the pay was fantastic, and I was hesitant to give it up. But what made me finally throw in the towel was the fact that as I sat there at dinner that night, I couldnt stop fuming over the events that had just transpir ed.Then I realized that Id been doing the same thing for months - letting an unpleasant work experience spill over into my personal life and mess with my general well-being. I could no longer let that happen, and so I resigned.Of course, I did so respectfully . I gave my firm a months notice, which I was able to do in the absence of having another job lined up. In my official letter, I thanked my boss for taking me on and teaching me a lot, which he actually did. And I made sure to wrap up all major items I was working on before my last day to not leave anyone particularly in the lurch.I also made sure I was prepared financially to kiss my paycheck goodbye. For months, Id been adding to my emergency fund to allow myself the option to quit. I also looked into my health insurance options in advance, since I knew Id need to secure coverage of my own. And Im grateful I did those things, because they bought me the option to leave when Id truly had enough. Why am I sharing this story now ? Its simple I still have many friends who are utterly miserable at their jobs .Now obviously, not working isnt an option, since we all have bills to pay. But it pains me to see so many people I know unhappy day in, day out. So if theres one takeaway here, its this I was dissatisfied at my job long before I quit, but what drove me over the edge was realizing that I couldnt shake those bad feelings from work even after leaving the office. That wasnt acceptable to me, and it shouldnt be acceptable to anyone. If youve been unhappy with your job to the point where its impacted your overall well-being, its time to start planning your escape. Im not saying quit on a whim, because frankly, you should really have a backup plan. Rather, Im suggesting you figure out what itll take to allow you to quit your job, whether its more savings and/or a series of leads, and find a way to escape that bad situation. And who knows? It just might end up being the best thing you ever do for your career.

Job Interview Dos and Donts for the Modern Job-Hopper

Job Interview Dos and Donts for the Modern Job-HopperJob Interview Dos and Donts for the Modern Job-HopperMillennials are more likely to change jobs than any generation before. In fact, 91 percent of workers born between 1991 and 1997 plan to stay in a job for less than three years, and the average 24-year-old today has already held 6.4 jobs. There are many valid reasons to change jobs a chance to learn a new skill, a sudden opening at the company of your dreams or even just a change of location. But with changing jobs every three years comes pressure to explain your background during job interviews. Unfortunately there are plenty of opportunities to make a mistake.Heres a look at seven important Dos and Donts for positioning yourself for a career change without jeopardizing your futureDoHave an verbunden presence. You dont have to maintain a daily blog, but you should have a simple landing page that directs people to your LinkedIn profile and contains a brief personal statement and p hoto. Consider investing in a simple website platform such as WordPress or SquareSpace to increase your personal brand SEO.Craft an intentional social media presence. While your online presence is revealed in search results, your social media presence is very specific and can be more easily searchable. If you want a hiring manager to take you seriously online, your Twitter, Facebook, Google + and every other platform must be 100 percent professional or 100 percent private. We recommend professional.Include short jobs on your resume. If you have experience that relates directly to the position youre applying for, dont be afraid to include it on your resume. Consider adding a section of Seasonal employment practicums and list positions that lasted six months or less in one place.Consider freelancing. Over 53 million Americans currently freelance for their income. Now that the term is not commonly misused to cover unemployment, consider building your name, reputation and portfolio with in your field by freelancing on the side. Pepper your interview with pertinent examples of your work experience and how your freelancing efforts helped you understand the job.DontSay youre Up for anything. Even if you have an array of different talents from taking on so many different jobs, its mucksmuschenstill important to present yourself as a professional with a specialty. The more sporadic your work history, the more consistent and professional your interview presentation needs to be. Lay that foundation by making firm statements about what kind of results you can provide, not how many different things youre willing to do on the job.Be vague about why youre leaving a job. Speaking of consistent and professional, your interviewer will know if youre lying or being evasive about why youre leaving a job. Make sure youre up front with a professional reason behind this career change and be honest about your passion for (and experience in) this new venture.Imply youll be on the move s oon. Unless explicitly stated in a contract, your hiring manager cant expect you to stay onboard for a set number of years. However, that doesnt mean you should clear the air by disclosing how long you plan to stay with the company. Approach every new job as if it might be the one that you stay at forever. And should you find you need to move on in two to three years, you will be able to move on guilt-and-expectation-free.Its no longer a sound career plan to find a company and stick with it for 15 years. Younger workers are taking on jobs, learning valuable skills and moving onto the next one. Do so strategically, and youll build a network of jobs that dovetail into a stunning career.

Keeping It Real

Keeping It Real Keeping It Real Keeping It Real The real-world aerodynamic performance of a vehicle can be better simulated in computer models such as SIMULIA than in wind tunnels. Image: Dassault Systèmes. Designing an automobile body is as much an artform as anything. On top of an underlying armature of metal and foam, a layer of clay is applied and shaped until the designer feels he has captured the essence of a sports car or SUV. The full-scale model is then sent to a wind tunnel to check the aerodynamic flow over the surface. One advantage, the modelers say, is speed and efficiency. Whereas it has taken hours to update a large computer-aided design model and rerun a computational fluid dynamics simulation, the clay model can be revised with a knife and the flick of a wrist. In the face of some entrenched resistance, however, new technology is improving on this methodand for good reason. Real-world road conditions provide different aerodynamic performance compared to wind tunnel testing because of open-road wavering caused by cross winds, traffic, and other unsteady effects not seen in wind tunnels. And thanks to some recent advances in modeling and simulation software, models can be altered and simulations can be rerun very quickly or, in some cases, in real time. The current wave of digital transformation has produced a rapid expansion of engineering simulations across the entire product lifecycle, beginning with digital exploration, continuing to digital prototyping and then operations and maintenance. In addition, dramatic improvements have been made in various modeling and simulation technologies and facilities. These include the use of high-performance multicore and GPU processors, incorporation of AI and machine learning facilities, novel user interfaces, and new tools for better interaction and visualizing simulations. Thanks to these improvements, simulation software is more powerful than ever before, advancing across a number of different dimensions. The models are more accurate, able to consider multiple physical forces in an integrated fashion to more closely represent real conditions and enable engineers to simulate entire systems performance. Second, the combination of software and hardware has increased the speed at which these models operate. Thirdand related to speedmany of the applications enable engineers to explore models interactively and can respond to changes in real time. Finally, the software has become powerful enough and integrated with artificial intelligence that no longer does one need to be an expert to obtain superior results. Simulation software is now more pervasive and increasingly ingrained into the DNA of mainstream engineering. It provides engineers a faster, simpler way to explore and design digitally. And coupled with seamless and connected workflows with the core design tools in the market, simulation will enable engineers to make educated design decisions. At the moment, each of the leading simulation vendors is pursuing a slightly different path. However, these differences illuminate the contours of what is on the horizon and point to the future of software-enhanced engineering. Interactive Interface One company that has seen a glimpse of the future is Wibotic, a maker of battery charging platforms for mobile robots and drones. The company was looking for a way to redesign the charging station to better dissipate the heat produced during charging. The design team turned to ANSYS Discovery, a suite of products that provides an interactive interface for manipulating geometry, materials types, or physics inputs, then instantaneously displaying changes in performance. In about 10 minutes, Wibotic engineers were able to analyze a completely new model and test thermal characteristics and airflow. The ability to simulate multiple design iterations in a short amount of time resulted in reduced prototyping costs, while the time saved was spent on other tasks related to product development, like usability, aesthetic design, and design for manufacturability, as well as shortening the time to market. ANSYS has optimized speed in its Discovery suitethe software takes advantage of the computational power of NVIDIA graphics processing units and CUDA, parallel GPU programming tools. According to the company, an engineer can start seeing simulation results in seconds after importing a geometry, with no need for a high-performance computing system, and can change the design and physics and immediately view the results. For instance, a user can apply a combustion force to a model of a piston cylinder and see the stresses throughout the entire 3-D volume of the enginein just seconds. In a single afternoon, an engineer can explore countless design options with near real-time feedback on structural, thermal, or fluids performance. Other new approaches in the ANSYS Discovery suite include tight coupling of simulation with geometric modeling, which allows for instant modification and results update from a single graphical context, and new automated solver and discretization methods that make all decisions about time step, meshing, and convergence based on physics conditions and behavior without user interaction. Other software vendors are also looking to update their interfaces. COMSOL, the provider of an integrated software environment for creating physics-based models and simulation apps, has introduced the Application Builder for its multiphysics software. The Application Builder allows for customized user interfaces to multiphysics models as well as a means for communicating complex design ideas across multiple simulation and process departments. The goal is to allow app users to easily explore the outcomes of proposed designs. The potential for this feature is illustrated by work done by researchers at the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in Coventry, England, to communicate their work into shaped metal deposition, an additive manufacturing technique where sheets of molten metal are slowly deposited, layer by layer, building up a surface in a process similar to welding. In SMD, thermal expansion can deform the cladding as it cools, so such deformations must be kept to a minimum. MTC built an app using the Application Builder available in COMSOL Multiphysics to allow users to experiment with the deposition process. Geometries, heat sources, materials, and deposition paths can all be altered using the app to test whether a viable end product is produced. The app allows an end user, who may be oblivious to the underlying model complexities, to test the system for specific customer needs and projects. Since MTCs modeling experts are not needed to run these simulations, their time is freed up, while end users can interact and thoroughly test the system to their satisfaction. In another advance in multiphysics simulation, COMSOL has introduced a hybrid boundary element method-finite element method technology that enables computation of acoustics and acoustic-structure interactions. With this new capability, users can analyze the full range of acoustic frequencies, from the lowest bass notes to ultrasound, while tying up fewer computing resources than running a finite-elements simulation alone. Along with this capability, users can also leverage all the possible multiphysics couplings available in the software. Multiscale Capabilities As mentioned earlier, automobile manufacturing can benefit tremendously from advanced simulation. As an alternative to wind-tunnel testing, for example, a detailed computer model of a vehicle can be placed in a SIMULIA PowerFlow computational fluid dynamics simulation. The simulation can virtually test and optimize designs against real-world scenariossome of which cannot be reproduced in a test chamber. SIMULIA is a part of Dassault Systèmes and is available in the companys 3DEXPERIENCE suite of computer-aided design, 3-D digital mock-up, and product lifecycle management software. In addition to multiphysics, Dassaults applications boast multiscale capabilities, able to handle everything from atoms and molecules to airplanes and even large cities in a single simulation. That capacity can be seen in an automobile design simulation concerning electronic connections within and between cars. Todays cars contain an increasing number of electronic systems, all of which need to be connected either via cables or wirelessly. Many systems require antennas such as the navigation system, distance radar, keyless entry, or tire pressure monitors, just to name a few. There is a large variety of different antenna types, too: window glass antennas for radio, rooftop antennas for communication and GPS positioning, and many other antennas for connectivity, either vehicle to vehicle or vehicle to the environment, including the connection of users mobile phone to the entertainment system. In addition, there are many antennas related to driving assistance or autonomous drive systems such as the 77 Ghz long range distance radar. All together there are dozens of antennas in a car which need to be installed at the right positions. Ideally these antennas should be invisible and must not interfere with other antennas or electronic systems in the car. The ability to model multiple physical parameters over multiple scales enables Dassaults applications to examine very short wavelength waves over a large space within the car. This allows designers to ensure that there is enough space to place each antenna while positioning them in locations that are able to withstand small bumps and jolts. Additionally, the design must be mindful of the effects of sensors getting dirty or covered with water or ice, so the simulation must take air flow into account. The complex nature of products today that they are not purely mechanical but rather mechatronicis pushing multidiscipline simulation into the forefront of many applications. One software publisher, Siemens PLM, is addressing the changing role of simulation by providing Simcenter, a complete portfolio of simulation and test solutions for the entire development cycle. For example, Simcenter provides full end-to-end durability testing, combining data collection and analytics into one single environment in its newly released Simcenter Testlab application. It covers every step of a typical test, from channel setup and measurements, to validation, consolidation, analysis, and reporting. Researchers at Siemens also are looking at several methods involving new approaches to grids and voxel-based analysis. The goal is to provide real-time solvers in high-dimensional design spaces that can generate both the design and the model for analysis, so that they can be used for the creative processes. The first step will be interactive cause-effect simulations for non-experts that would bring the simulation process into the initial design stages, but still require referral to high-end solvers and analysts for final verification. The analyses of these complex, high-dimensional design spaces would be presented either on a screen or through VR headsets. In addition to traditional 3-D models from CAD and CAE systems, Siemens is facilitating the creation of digital twinsdynamic virtual replications of products and physical assets such as factories or power plantsthrough a variety of other solutions in its portfolio. Among these solutions are Simcenter Amesim, a multi-domain platform for system-level modeling and analysis, including software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop testing; Polarion, which manages complex configurations of embedded software through application lifecycle management; and Teamcenter, the central repository and workflow engine for managing the requirements, functional, logical, and physical aspects of a product. Holistic System Simulations The use of digital twins and simulation models in production, operation, and service has been increasing in recent years. The consulting firm Gartner predicts that half of large industrial companies will leverage digital twins by 2021, resulting in those organizations gaining a 10 percent improvement in effectiveness. Engineers have employed these dynamic detailed simulations to construct, evaluate, and validate designs in the product creation process, since they provide designers the ability to optimize deployments for peak efficiency and create other what-if scenarios. Unlike physical models, digital twins enable globally distributed, multidisciplinary teams the detailed information they need to evaluate opportunities and predict asset performance. In several industries the design verification and product creation process is moving away from a major reliance on physical testing to almost a full virtual simulation product verification process. That covers detecting and isolating faults, performing diagnostics and troubleshooting, recommending corrective action, determining the ideal maintenance schedule, optimizing asset operation, and generating insights to improve the next generation of the product. Digital twins also have been used in model predictive control or simulation-based assist systems. Many major software vendors have embraced the demand for creating digital twins. ANSYS, to take one example, includes a feature in its latest releases that enables engineers to quickly build, validate, and deploy these digital representations of physical products. The creation of holistic system simulations via twin building is further supported by pres of those applications include flight control and engine control systems, landing gear systems, automatic pilots, cockpit displays, and emergency tracking systems. Together, those multifunction and multiscale simulations empower users to perform diagnostics and troubleshooting, determine the ideal maintenance programs, optimize the performance of each asset, and generate insightful data to improve the next generation of their products. The company estimates that these digital twin features could cut maintenance costs by about 20 percent. The company is now working to develop means to create comprehensive and precise digital models of products and production operations to manage the complexity of future smart products and smart production operations. At Siemens, the digital twin is viewed in the context of the entire lifecyclea virtual representation of a physical product, its production processes, and its performance. For example, a digital twin is enhanced with mathematical models to enable electric motors to undergo something like a virtual X-ray: A virtual sensor developed by Siemens researchers estimates the temperature of the motors interior, in real time, without the aid of a real physical sensor installed there. This information makes it possible to prevent unnecessary downtimesa change that can dramatically lower operating costs. And users of Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE platform can develop a digital twin to provide a virtual representation of a product in order to better understand how it will be manufactured, delivered to market, and whether it can serve its users needs as it was designed. The goal is to optimize the entire value chain and increase both manufacturing and operational efficiency. The current trend of using simulation tools pervasively throughout the product design cycle as a proven, effective means of streamlining the product development process will accelerate over the next few years. The convergence, and synergistic coupling, of a number of disruptive technologiesincluding artificial intelligence, extended reality, novel human-technology interfaces, multicore and quantum computing, cognitive cyber-physical systems, and Big Data prescriptive analyticswill usher in a new era providing exponential acceleration of disruptive solutions to the most challenging digital exploration problems. Innovative organizations have to put in place processes to avoid the pain of transformation. They must rethink their strategies, retool their capabilities, and revitalize their workforce for stronger, longer-lasting success. AHMED K. Here are 3 ways to dodge workplace B.S.

Here are 3 ways to dodge workplace B.S. Here are 3 ways to dodge workplace B.S. Four years ago, my colleague and I quit our jobs, formed our own agency and published a novel.Sheer courage at the point of career crossroads?Nah. The truth is, after more than 20 years in Corporate America, the worst kind of 9-to-5 grind had worn us down. We didn’t even realize how much B.S. we had been swimming in until we created a little time and distance between ourselves and our former careers. In hindsight, we realized we had escaped three specific types of soul-crushing workplace B.S. -  all of which we eventually wove into our novel, B.S., Incorporated.1. Office-as-daycareThe manager doesn’t trust employees to do the simplest tasks and considers any side-conversation or work break to be a mortal sin against the corporation. What it looks like: You have to record your whereabouts on a cubicle whiteboard. Your manager insists you cc: her on every email. The office has short (or no) cube walls, so the boss can easily eyeball anyone who might not be nose-to-the-grindstone fro m dawn ’til dusk. How to deal: Play by each and every rule, or you’ll be branded a troublemaker. Use a restroom on a different floor - because your manager *will* check under the stall door for your shoes and not be shy about holding meetings with you while you’re indisposed. And get that résumé updated.2. The emperor’s clothing storeA new leader arrives with impressive credentials and heroic tales of previous workplace successes -  then quickly proves himself incapable of managing the basics. What it looks like: The new boss throws around terms like innovation, “step change” and “journey management.” He eliminates activities he doesn’t understand, and gives you vague direction on his directionally vague vision. He flip-flops on important issues, chalking it up to “managerial agility.”How to deal: Be a good corporate soldier -  emperors don’t appreciate candor, unless you’re telling them how awesomely awesome they are. Gently steer them toward work that will be successful, knowing full well they’ll take the credit. Then kick your network into gear: Schedule coffee chats with people who work in departments or companies that have leaders you can respect.3. Forced funThe leadership team intends to make you happy -  whether you like it or not. What it looks like: Eye-rolling icebreaker exercises kick off every meeting (e.g, “If you were sea mammal, what sea mammal would you be?”). Attendance is tracked at “optional” happy hours. Mandatory fun activities, like two-minute afternoon dance parties, are rammed down your throat. How to deal: Smile and fly under the radar. Grin through the icebreakers, make brief appearances at the unhappy hours, and schedule meetings during the dance-a-thon. Then find your real work friends and schedule an off-the-radar happy hour where you can vent.Jennifer Rock and  Michael Voss are the owners of the Minneapolis-based communications agency ROCKdotVOSS and co-authors of the workplace novel B.S., In corporated.

5 Ways To Encourage Employee Volunteer Programs During the Holidays

5 Ways To Encourage Employee Volunteer Programs During the Holidays 5 Ways To Encourage Employee Volunteer Programs During the Holidays 5 Ways To Encourage Employee Volunteer Programs During the Holidays Tis’ the season of giving back and volunteering. Whether you're planning the office holiday party, shopping for that perfect gift, or preparing a long holiday vacation, the season brings opportunities to join colleagues, friends, and loved ones for a little merry-making. Why not extend your festivities to include volunteerism? Many companies offer employee volunteer programs and opportunities in the office. Throughout the year, corporations donate time, money, tangible goods, and other resources to help organizations provide much needed help to the underrepresented. What about the holidays? Most nonprofits center their marketing campaigns around the holidays, when people are more generous and likely to lend a hand. Thanksgiving and the weeks following Black Friday are perfect opportunities for the office to pitch in and lend a hand. Here are five simple ways you can encourage your colleagues to volunteer in your community and make a difference during the holiday season. 1. Give #GivingTuesday a try. #GivingTuesday sponsors a day of giving every year. The holiday falls on the first Tuesday following Black Friday. While many Americans tend to splurge on Black Friday and neglect the donation jars found in many stores, #GivingTuesday offers the chance to redirect spending to a more charitable cause. The organization provides several out-of-the-box ideas for planning a company-wide giving day. One idea provided by #GivingTuesday is to choose one non-profit and collect donations at your office and/or store. Companies can even offer to match each contribution, up to a specific dollar amount, and provide a thermometer-style measurement or ruler to track the donations which helps customers and team members feel pride in their accomplishments. Also, consider providing name cards for those who donate, including the amount. Hang those cards in a public area so all can see the impact your campaign has on others. Small businesses shouldn't worry about the engagement or time required to plan #GivingTuesday. The organization provides resources to help plan, promote, and continue giving throughout the year. From social media posts to street signs and press releases, #GivingTuesday has planned every angle for the holiday season, hoping to stimulate giving and other holiday volunteer opportunities. 2. Bring Santa to life. Children are the primary focus during the holidays. However, many parents are unable to provide basic needs, let alone toys and special treats. Why not surprise a young boy or girl this season with a stocking full of toys from Santa? Sponsor a toy or clothing drive during your office party. If you run a retail or hospitality service, set up containers, and ask customers to drop off items for donation. Include information for monetary donations as well. One good program is Toys for Tots. This organization provides all the marketing and resources needed for a satisfactory drive. Toys for Tots, founded by the U.S. Marine Corps, dedicates its time to helping poverty-stricken families by providing Christmas gifts for children. Click on the following link to contact Toys for Tots to learn about toy drives and ways to volunteer in your community. Related:12 Holiday Gift Ideas for Job Seekers 3. Help feed the homeless. Nearly a quarter of Americans face hunger and have difficulty providing food for their families daily, let alone providing turkey with all the trimmings at Thanksgiving. One way to help during the season is by serving food at a local homeless shelter or soup kitchen. Regional food banks frequently seek volunteers to help cook and serve holiday dinners. The Salvation Army also seeks volunteers and donations for its annual holiday meal. This organization provides clothing, food, toys, and other much needed holiday aid to families in America. One of the Salvation Army's more under-promoted services is nursing home and senior care help during the season. Volunteers bring food to the more than one million hungry seniors in America. Click on the following link to contact the Salvation Army for more information about ways to volunteer in your community. 4. Give a home for the holidays. Not everyone will sing I'll be home for Christmas this year. Homelessness is a persistent issue in America, but your employee volunteer program can help those without a home this holiday. Plan a paid volunteer day, and send your team to one of Habitat for Humanity's thousand locations. This is an opportunity to learn about the organization's mission and gain some valuable repair skills. For those who aren't handy with a hammer, Habitat has the perfect volunteer solution. The organization sponsors ReStores in many large cities. These stores sell renovated housing items, furniture, tools, etc., at a discounted price. The proceeds go towards renovating or building new homes. Related:Jobs in Demand During the Holiday Season 5. Think about individual commitments. Some companies just can't spare the time or people to dedicate an entire day volunteering. It's understandable: Companies, particularly small businesses, must manage their resources and sometimes cannot afford to volunteer. Another problem is coordinating a time slot that fits everyone's work and personal schedules, and team members may find it difficult to schedule time outside normal business hours. Don't worry! There's still a solution to engage your team and find ways to volunteer in your community. Consider hosting a volunteer competition. Offer to provide prizes or awards for the person who volunteers the most hours or provides the largest donation. Ask team members if they are willing to donate a few sick days to the pile, and offer it as an incentive to take time off to help. If your supervisor doesn't approve of the sick days, advocate for a few hours each weekend or after hours. Allow team members for choose the nonprofit they want to support and their own volunteer schedule. Another viable solution is volunteer matching, also known as skill-based volunteering (SBV). VolunteerMatch offers a free service that connects charitable organizations to professionals and subject matter experts. Ask your office team members to sign up for a free account and offer their professional advice or services to organizations in need. Not only does this help reduce the cost of expensive professional services, volunteers can list the job or consulting opportunity in their resume. Plan your volunteerism early. Finding volunteering opportunities during the holidays can be more difficult than most people imagine. The demand for volunteer gigs increase during the holidays, but more people feel the generosity bug and wants to help. It's just something about the season that brings out the best in us. Start looking for opportunities as early as possible. Keep in mind, volunteering isn't a one-time, show-up-and-leave task. Nonprofits have to coordinate training and spend valuable resources to offer these opportunities. It's just not worth the time or effort for one company to send a team for a few hours. Plan your volunteering activity around the needs of the organization. Call ahead and ask about training, time commitment, etc. Nonprofits often suspend volunteer training and recruitment during the week of Christmas up to the week after News Years. Offer to send your team a few weeks before the event for training and orientation. Click on the following link for more advice on getting ahead. Need to help with your resume? Advances in Vision-Guided Robots

Advances in Vision-Guided Robots Advances in Vision-Guided Robots Advances in Vision-Guided Robots For years, vision-guided robots have been a mainstay for manufacturing and assembly tasks such as inspecting and sorting parts. These operations tend to be carried out in highly constrained, structured environments with zero obstacles. However, advances in processing power and sensor technologies are now enabling robots to undertake more unstructured tasks such as autonomous flying, driving, and mobile service activities, which require better vision systems to identify and avoid obstacles. For example, vision-based systems are now used for detecting and tracking people and vehicles for driving safety and self-driving systems, says Martial Hebert, director of Carnegie Mellon Universitys Robotics Institute. Progress is being made in the fundamental approaches, as well as supporting technologies such as computing and high-quality sensing. Personal robotics are developing increasing interaction capabilities. The overall trend is toward closer collaboration between robots and humans. Real-time 3D model building using a consumer-level color and depth camera. Image: Sandia National Laboratories Cutting-Edge Research Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) is conducting extensive research in the field of telerobotics, where a typical application would be a human robot operator who relies on the robots onboard cameras to convey a sense of presence at the remote location. However, cameras on pan-tilt units are in many ways a poor replacement for human vision, says Robert J. Anderson, principle member of the Robotic and Security Systems Department at SNL. Human eyesight has better resolution, a very large peripheral field of view, and the ability to make quick glances to fill in a mental model of a space. When operators work with standard cameras, they tend to get tunnel vision, and rapidly forget the locations of objects just out of the field of view. To improve this situation, SNL researchers have combined live vision with constructed 3D models of a world to enhance a remote operators sense of space.By using gaming technology, such as the Kinect sensor from Microsoft, they can scan and create a model of a remote site.Rather than a single 2D display camera view, the operator can view the remote robot from any direction, much like first-person shooter video game, providing either an over-the-shoulder view of an avatar, a tracking view, or a world view. This drastically reduces the problem of tunnel vision in operating remote robots, says Anderson. Although GPS has become cheap enough and reliable enough to enable navigation in a collision-free space, there is always the potential for collision duringmobile, ground-based operations. However, a new generation of inexpensive 3D vision systems will make it possible for robots to navigate autonomously in cluttered environments, and to dynamically interact with the human world. Real-time 3D model building using a consumer-level color and depth camera. Image: Sandia National Laboratories This was recently demonstrated by the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART), which constructed a self-driving golf cart that successfully navigated around people and other obstacles during a test run at a large public garden in Singapore. The sensor network was built from off-the-shelf components. If you have a simple suite of strategically placed sensors and augment that with reliable algorithms, you will get robust results that require less computation and have less of a chance to get confused by fusing sensors, or situations where one sensor says one thing and another sensor says something different, says Daniela Rus, professor of electrical engineering and computer science at MIT and team leader. Manufacturing Transformation No industry has been more transformed by vision-guided robots than manufacturing. The earliest robots were designed for simple pick-and-place operation. Now, with technologic advances in sensors, computing power, and imaging hardware, vision-guided robots are much more functional and greatly improve product quality, throughput, and operational efficiency. According to an article by Axium Solutions, a manufacturer of vision-guided robotic solutions for material handling and assembly, on roboticstomorrow.com, Enhanced computing power helps developers create more robust and complex algorithms. Improvements in pattern matching and support for 3D data enabled new applications like random bin picking, 3D pose determination, and 3D inspection and quality control. This probably explains, at least partially, why new records for machine vision systems and components in North America were established in the last two years. Hardware improvements for vision-guided robotics include better time-of-flight sensors, sheet-of-light triangulation scanners, and structured light and stereo 3D cameras. Recent advances in sheet-of-light triangulation scanners open many new possibilities for inline inspection and control applications requiring high 3D data density and high speed, states Axium. The latest CMOS sensors can reach a scanning speed up to several thousands of high resolutions 3D profiles per second. The main advantage of structured light and stereo 3D cameras over sheet-of-light triangulation is that it relative motion between the sensor and the part is not required. This allows fast generation of 3D point clouds with sufficient accuracy for good scene understanding and robot control. These and other recent developments in algorithms and sensor technologies make it possible to efficiently implement vision-guided robotics tasks for manufacturers, Axium concludes. Therefore, we are optimistic that more and more projects will integrate machine vision and robots in the following years. Mark Crawford is an independent writer. Building Stonehenge Simple DIY Job

Building Stonehenge Simple DIY Job Building Stonehenge Simple DIY Job Bestselling novelists have written epic tales imagining its origins. Thousands of people flock to it each year for its supposed mystical and spiritual powers. A fictional rock band even wrote a memorable song about it in the cult movie This is Spinal Tap. The ancient Stonehenge monument in Salisbury, UK, has fascinated admirers and confounded scientists and engineers for centuries, primarily because of what is not known about it. In addition to the basic questions of What is it?, Who built it?, and When did they build it?, this great monument has always had one of the greatest engineering questions of all time attached to it: How in the heck did they build it? Carbon dated to about 2,500 B.C., Stonehenge was built long before the advent of even simple engineering advances such as the wheel, pulleys diesel engines. Add to this the fact that much of the stone used has been traced to sections of Wales nearly 200 miles away, and you have the makings of one of historys all-time mysteries. A One-Man Job? Estimates of the manpower needed to transport the stones and then create the structure itself have varied over the years, but all have been immense. In his novel Stonehenge, novelist Bernard Cornwell vividly re-imagined a popular theory, with the stones carried on top of wooden sledges pulled by hundreds of oxen, with the final positioning managed by hundreds of men over many years. Other theories have involved transportation by sea, again with hundreds of men and teams of oxen to drag the stones to and from the ships. Stonehenge was built long before the advent of the wheel and pulleys. However, in the last few years, a man in Flint, MI, USA, has put forth a new theory as to how many people needed to be involved in the construction of Stonehenge. His estimate, based on the life-sized replicas he has constructed in his own backyard? One. Thats right. W.T. Wally Wallington, retired carpenter and construction worker, has proven that the Stonehenge monument could have been transported, placed, and secured by one man, in a relatively short amount of time. And judging by the video he has placed on YouTube and on his website, The Forgotten Technology, which first ran on The Discovery Channel several years ago, it doesnt even appear all that difficult. It has been theorized that the construction of Stonehenge may have involved transportation by sea utilizing men and oxen to move stones from ships. In addition to an ingenious wooden transport he developed called a round road, which uses the momentum and weight of the rock to carry it rapidly up and down along an undulating wooden road (and hence, conceivably transport it overland quickly), Wallington has developed a method for spinning, adjusting, and moving incredibly large objects that simply makes observers wonder if they can believe their eyes. However, be assured, its all based on principles of physics and engineering. I found a simple explanation for this, to move a block about the weight of a minivan, would be to place a stone underneath it, he says in the video. And once I balance on it, I can spin it. Once he starts this massive block of stone rotating with nothing but simple wood handles and a small stone as a tiny fulcrum, it suddenly becomes very easy to imagine ancient people, surrounded by plenty of both of these materials, doing the same. However, to get the stone going in forward motion, one more trick is needed. W.T. “Wally” Wallington. Image courtesy of W.T. Wallington/theforgottentechnology. You can see Ive got two handles on my lever, and I can place another stone on this [the opposite] side, he says. Now, every time I spin a half a rotation on each stone, I move the block horizontally the distance between the stones. Amazingly, with this method, he can move a one-ton block 300 feet per hour by walking with it, with each rotation being approximately one step. Even more astonishingly, this method scales up to enable him to move a 19,200-pound block, the approximate size of a Stonehenge slab, by himself. Then, assisted by only his two sons, he can get it into position to drop into the ground, raising the slab into position by slowly stacking planks of wood, one by one, beneath the stone, on either side of the fulcrum, until it is upright and can be tipped into the hole. Rebuilding Stonehenge Wallington is currently in the process of creating his own Stonehenge, with one entire lintel-topped structure already constructed and pictured on his website. This ancient engineering can be applied to the construction of The Pyramids as well: Wallington claims thatusing his techniques, he could build the Great Pyramid of Giza in 25 years, with only 640 workers. Is the great mystery of Stonehenge solved then? The truth is that minus a time machine, we will never know how the inhabitants of prehistoric Britain constructed this great monument. But we do know the technology to execute this simple method was available, it was appropriate to the environment in which the people of the time lived, and it was certainly possible that a clever human being could have had the same brainstorm Wally Wallington did those many centuries ago. So this December 21, as the news reports are full of stories of the modern-day pilgrimages made to the site to celebrate the Winter Solstice, and the wonder and mystery of Stonehenges origins are once again celebrated, you might turn to the person next to you and say, I know how they did it. It was easy And you just might be right. Carbon dated to about 2,500 B.C., Stonehenge was built long before the advent of even simple engineering advances such as the wheel, pulleys ... diesel engines.

Breaking Down Online Job Platforms Indeed vs. Monster

Breaking Down Online Job Platforms Indeed vs. Monster Breaking Down Online Job Platforms Indeed vs. Monster So, you’re a candidate in need of a job, career change or are simply interested in testing the job market waters.  Or maybe you’re an employer in desperate need of a quality candidate to fit a new, niche role at your up and coming company.  After quickly dismissing the idea of perusing the classifieds section of your local newspaper over your morning coffee, you hop online and find that times have certainly changed when it comes to matching quality candidates with open positions. While the easy access to job boards has certainly been a boon in the employment field, the easy access to build out a simple website or search platform has also increased the number of websites, blogs, email lists and other search platforms.  Candidates and companies alike may be scratching their head over which choice would best suit their individual job search needs.  Take for example two of the biggest names in the job hunting game: Indeed.com vs. Monster.com.  Each has a snazzy website and plenty of press coverage but which one wins out when it comes to the tools, job listings and quality that you need?  Let’s find out Greater Exposure and Choices While we all hope to be able to hop online, type in a few target keywords and find the job of our dreams, the reality is that most career seekers will need to sort through several to several dozen job listings to find one that’s a good fit from a salary, experience and fulfillment perspective.  It only makes sense, then, that the more options the better when it comes to an online job board. Indeed.com hands down has the largest selection of active and relevant job postings of any other hiring platform.  On our most recent search, Indeed had added nearly 750,000 job listings within a 7 day period.  Indeed’s approach to matching candidates with open positions is also dynamic, acting as both a job posting board where companies can list positions and interact directly with candidates, as well as a job aggregator.  The latter means that Indeed.com also goes out searching the web, from major company websites to other job listing boards, in order to bring back the largest variety and greatest scope of open positions of any other service. A perusal of Monster.com’s website yielded no data on recent job additions.  Also, while Monster is a well known and respected site for listing jobs direct, its aggregation function is a much newer addition, shrinking the pool of available jobs for candidates to sort through. All Types of Jobs for All Types of Candidates Speaking of job pools, many job sites focus on filling full-time positions, often specializing in a certain area such as openings that require a college degree, are in a set range of fields, or that offer traditional, in office career paths.   Indeed.com has consistently strived to be the platform for all types of job candidates.  Part-time, freelance and remote positions receive equal billing.  Better yet, indeed.com allows people using their platform to streamline their searches, filtering results for part or full-time or a host of other non-traditional work scenarios. Websites such as Monster have a distinct preference for traditional job routes.  This approach to supplying information on open positions may work for a subset of potential employees, but also excludes a large swath of those in need of quality positions to fit the needs of their individual lifestyles. The Bottom Line on Indeed.com vs. Monster.com When it comes to the battle for job search supremacy between Indeed vs. Monster, Indeed handily wins in the number, and range of job listings available.  From sourcing jobs both internally and from other career sites to be inclusive of a variety of candidate types and working styles, Indeed wins out in our book.  While bigger isn’t always better in many areas, when it comes to matching prospective employees with the career of their dreams, having options is never a bad thing.

The Best (and Worst) Times to Check Your Email

The Best (and Worst) Times to Check Your Email The Best (and Worst) Times to Check Your Email When You Should (and Shouldn't) Check Your Email Don’t worry; your emails aren’t going anywhere. Email might be a crucial tool for communication in your day-to-day work, but it can end up being a major waste of time if not used effectively. This is especially true if your smartphone is linked to your work email; you'll get swamped with notifications regardless of where you go and what you're doing, leading you to constantly switch your focus from one thing to another. While having zero unread messages might give you short-term satisfaction, keep in mind that it does not reflect your productivity! In fact, you'll be dragged into a never-ending cycle of distraction, as new emails will only keep coming in. TopResume's career advice expert, Amanda Augustine, recently shared her tips with Fast Company for when you should and shouldn't check your email. Here are her seven tips for checking your emails and minimizing distraction: 1. Don't check your email first thing in the morning It's an instinctive habit for many professionals to check their inbox the moment they reach the office, or even worse, as soon as they wake up in the morning. While you might think that checking your emails before moving on to other tasks boosts your productivity, it's actually one of the worst ways to start your day. Not only can it throw off your schedule and to-do list for the whole day how many times did you open your inbox to 'just check' and then, hours later, you look up and realize your morning is gone? but it also wastes precious hours when most people are operating at their peak levels of productivity, Augustine explains. Imagine coming in to work with urgent tasks to finish by the end of the day, only to open your inbox and find hundreds of unread emails. Hours later, you finish responding to the emails only to realize that your day is gone! 2. Do use the 2-minute rule to skim through your inbox If you're really worried that you might be missing out on urgent requests and emails from your boss by not checking your inbox, use the 2-minute rule to skim through your emails at a set time in the morning. This strategy is based on productivity expert David Allen's best-selling book, Getting Things Done. Look through your inbox and identify emails that require immediate response or ones that can be replied to easily. If you can finish your responses to these emails in two minutes, send them right away. Keep in mind that this doesn't mean that you should respond to every email that you can respond to within two minutes. This strategy means responding to messages that you can process easily and that relate to important people in the organization. Anything else can wait until later when you have more time. 3. Do check your email when you're away on a business trip If your employer is sending you away for conferences or business meetings and you've disappeared from their email trails without a single response, things won't look good for you. Remember, while you shouldn't be expected to be reachable 24/7 while traveling for work, your employer should be able to contact you from time to time during the duration of your trip. The company is bearing the cost of your excursion after all, so that isn't too much to ask for. Additionally, you should also be up to date with your emails when traveling on a business trip so that you don't miss out on what's going on back at the office. Your boss might be offering an exciting project that's up for grabs, and a simple mistake like checking your email late can cost you an exciting opportunity for growth. If you're traveling, always make sure that you enable roaming data or buy a local SIM card for easier connectivity. 4. Don't check your email when you're overwhelmed and procrastinating When you're feeling overwhelmed with your workload and approaching deadlines, it's easy to think of checking your email as being productive. Responding to your emails might help you feel like you're getting something done, but in fact, you're just running away from reality and putting off tasks that are more urgent and critical. Don't allow your email to become an excuse for why the real work you needed to complete did not get done, Augustine suggests. Whenever you find yourself opening your inbox, stop and take a step back to examine your pending tasks and re-establish your priorities. Never use your inbox as an excuse for why you couldn't finish the other tasks at hand, as that reflects badly on you. 5. Do check your email when you're expecting an important response If you're waiting for an important email from your clients, a delayed response can significantly slow down the progress of the whole project and opens up room for miscommunication and misinterpretation. Hence, keep your inbox open when you're expecting important emails. It also helps to set up special notifications on your phone for certain senders so that you'll get alerts when they email you. Setting up alerts like these would help to prevent distractions from unnecessary promotional messages. 6. Do check your email when you're commuting on public transportation If you happen to take the train or bus to work on a daily basis, this would be an ideal place to skim through your inbox and apply the 2-minute rule. It gives you a productive start of the day, using time that can't be spent doing much else. Additionally, it helps you to dive straight into urgent tasks when you reach the office. Similarly, the evening commute back home can be used to organize your emails into folders, delete spam and promotional messages, and set up an action list for the next day. 7. Do check your email on a scheduled time One of the most efficient ways to boost productivity is to schedule tasks in your calendar and keep to it. Similar to how you block out time for meetings and events in your calendar, set aside a block of time every day to check and respond to your emails. Setting aside a specific time like this helps to keep yourself accountable and fully focus on the task at hand. Additionally, this habit helps to set clear expectations to your colleagues about your response time. Don't let your inbox rule your time and energy. Instead, follow these tips to create an efficient and effective way of checking and responding to your work emails each day. You will thank yourself later! Is your email inbox full of recruiters or random promotions? If you're waiting for recruiter emails, your resume may be to blame. Check today with a resume review, on us!
